Zodiac Signs of the Buddhist Mandala
The zodiac signs as we presently know them were devised around the year 500 BCE in Mesopotamia based on an earlier model of eighteen signs. Within a few centuries the Greeks were deeply involved in the study of astronomy and astrology. Hellenistic astrology, which was the foundation for later European and Islamic traditions of astrology, was largely produced in Alexandria in Egypt starting around the second century BCE. Alexander died in 323 and Ptolemy took control of Egypt. The Ptolemaic Kingdom (305–30 BCE) ruled over Egypt until it came under Roman domination after the death of Cleopatra (69–30 BCE). The Romans subsequently took a deep interest in astrology and in the late Republic of the first century BCE it served as an exotic and alternative system of divination in competition with traditional Roman divination (augury and so forth). Although the chronology is somewhat unclear, between the second to fifth centuries CE, Hellenistic astrology was introduced to India and in various ways blended with the native systems of religious lore and astrology based on the twenty-seven or twenty-eight nakṣatra-s (lunar stations).

Tora トラ - 虎 - 寅 the Tiger Toys

. Tora Yakushi 寅薬師 "Tiger Yakushi" - Yakushi Nyorai .

The tiger is one of the 12 zodiac animals of the Asian calendar.
He is therefore a well-liked animal in folk art and handicraft.

. 2010 the Year of the Tiger 寅年 toradoshi
the white tiger in the West 白虎

It comes as a papermachee doll, clay doll or clay bell and other materials.
A tiger "can run for a thousand miles" and sees things far away, so it is a symbol for strength and good health. In China the tiger was known to ward off evil influence from the mind, so people put up little tiger figures to protect themselves and their families.

Something that is very special to you and you do not want to let go is called

tora no ko 虎の子 child of a tiger.
This shows the strong bond between a mother and her children.

Tigers are not native to Japan, but people of old have used their imagination to produce figures according to the tales they have heard and paintings they could collect from abroad. The first real tiger was brought to Japan via the Korean embassy in 1595 as a present to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

This is an old clay figure from Fushimi, in the collection of the Japan Toy Museum.
The Tiger Collection of the Museum is from Nagao Zensaburo 長尾善三, who collected more than 1000 tiger pieces. Zensaburo was born in the year of the tiger in Osaka in 1902 and visited the Shinno-San festival when he was 12 years old.

This is a papermachee doll in the tradition of Miharu Dolls.
Many were made after WW II. The tiger holding up his bottom is an old tradition from the Edo period. The male tiger has his head is slightly bent to the left and the mouth is wide open. There is also a female with the mouth closed, looking to the right. Thus they represent the "A-Un" spirit of Buddhism, represented in the Deva Kings.

yokomuki tora 横向き虎 tiger looking to the side

This amulet helps to avoid evil influences and keeps the children healthy.
It was first made by Iida Kishichi 飯田喜七, who had made Daruma dolls with the wish for safety at sea of the local fishing boats.
He then made the zodiac animals, especially the rabbit (usagi 卯) and this tiger 寅. He stopped producing, so there are no more animals for the following year of the dragon and later.
This is a papermachee doll.
It wiggles with its head, which is fixed in a special way that it looks to the side.
The yellow body is painted in vivid colors of red and black, with blue eyes.

Kato Kiyomasa 加藤清正

quote
Katô Kiyomasa (also known as Toranosuke "Tiger Boy")
was born the son of a blacksmith in Nakamura, a village in Owari where supposedly the regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi was also born.
... After Hideyoshi died in 1598, both Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari courted his support.
... A ferocious fighter and often ruthless, Katô Kiyomasa was a warrior, nothing more, nothing less. He wrote to his followers later in his life that poetry and dancing were shameful pastimes for a samurai, and ordered anyone who found himself engaged in the latter to commit suicide.
His cruelty and love of combat (for sport, he hunted tigers with a spear in Korea) earned him the nickname
Kishokan 鬼将官, or, 'Devil General'.

quote
... The Korean king Seonjo abandoned Seoul in fear of Kiyomasa. Kiyomasa held two Korean princes who had deserted as hostages and used them to force lower-ranking Korean officials to surrender.
Kiyomasa killed a tiger while hunting in the forest and presented the skin to Hideyoshi.

Kato Kiyomasa killing the tiger
清正猛虎仇討ち / 加藤清正虎退治

One of his concubines in Korea had been attacked and eaten by a fearful tiger. Kiyomasa got so angry, he took his long spear and killed the tiger in revenge.
The people of this village in Korea where very greatfull for this deed.

This act of bravery was often told to the samurai of Japan.

Festival Float with Kiyomasa
Morioka Festival
During the Morioka festival, floats of Kato Kiyomasa and Watonai 和藤内 are very popular.

. Watonai (Koxinga) 和唐内 / 和藤内 and Tiger Toys .

Legend knows that the tiger bit off the blade on one side of his spear and this was all that remained:

katakama yari 片鎌槍 single-sided sickle spear

... The single-sided sickle spear had a radical weapon design sporting a blade that was two-pronged.
Instead of being constructed like a military fork, a straight blade (as in su yari) was intersected just below its midsection by a perpendicular blade. This blade was slightly shorter than the primary, had curved tips making a parallelogram, and was set off center so that only 1/6 of its length extended on the other side. This formed a kind of messy 'L' shape.

Here is another episode from Kiyomasa in Japan

Horse meat was given to the soldiers by the warlord Kato Kiyomasa, when during the fight of Keicho in 1597 (Keichoo no eki 慶長の役】) all other meat and food was eaten and they had to slaughter the riding horses to keep alive.
Up to our day horse meat 馬肉 is eaten in Kumamoto.
