The Quick Guide to Traditional Japanese Arts and Handicrafts
has many examples of tangible and intangible cultural heritage registered with UNESCO. The Japan Tourism Agency figures show that the number of visitors to Japan is increasing year on year. In addition to sightseeing, we hope that visitors will take a step further to knowledge and understanding of Japan during their stay.
Japanese artisans are living testaments to historical Japan as the methods used to create their work have remained unchanged for centuries. By featuring them here we hope to re-ignite interest in them and their work so that these artisans will once again flourish and their traditions will live on.
Traditional Japanese handcrafts have developed with the foremost objective being to express gratitude for the blessings of nature such as wood, bamboo, stone or rock, cotton, and silk, which are used in their production. It is truly outstanding and unique art in the sense that these natural materials are consumed to the fullest without wasting the tiniest piece.
We hope that by learning about the traditional techniques used by these artisans you may gain some insights into Japanese culture. And perhaps you may also discover something beautiful and delightful that you never knew existed.

This summer “WANOBI-Beautiful Japan” is holding our first large-scale exhibition
'Chashitsu Exhibition- Creating a New Style of "SOU"'
at the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum in Kobe.
This is a comprehensive art exhibition of the work by nine artisans, embodying the essence of traditional Japanese chanoyu –the Way of Tea- with a contemporary feel for modern patrons to enjoy. We hope that this exhibition becomes a gateway to traditional Japanese culture.

Koshu Crystal Carving 甲州水晶貴石細工 Koshu Suisho Kiseki Zaiku
This craft started some one thousand years ago, after quartz was found near Mount Kinpu beyond Mitakeshosenkyo, which is famous for its beautiful views. When it was first discovered, it was used as an ornament but by the middle of the Edo period (1600-1868), Shinto priests were taking the raw material to Kyoto to have them made into gems.
Koshu Suisho Kiseki Zaiku started in the latter days of the Edo period, when master craftsmen were welcomed to the area and began polishing quartz on an iron sheet using a emery powder called kongousha made from a very hard stone, rather in the way that diamonds are polished.
Ornaments and items of jewelry are being produced today. Many of these pieces have been created to make the most of the distinctive features of the natural gem stone, meaning that no two items are alike.

Bashiko
Bashiko, another Taoist immortal, is considered by the Japanese to be the first veterinary surgeon. He supposedly lived in China in the years 2697-2597 B.C. and cured a dying dragon by operating on its throat. Bashiko is rarely depicted in art, while another Taoist sage, Chinnan, is more popularly shown with dragons.

saruoni, saru-oni 猿鬼 at Iwaido Shrine
This is an old shrine dedicated to Ônamuchi-no-Mikoto (or Iwatsukuwake no mikoto, according to another theory) and Kukurihime-no-Kami.
It is not known when the shrine was founded, but it is known as a shrine related to the legend of Saru-oni, which has been passed down from generation to generation in Yanagida, Noto Town. The legend goes like this:
Once upon a time,
a monster or preternatural creature called Saru-oni that lived in a rock cave bit cows and horses to death and did evil to humans. Then Keta Myojin (a gracious deity) of the highest ranking shrine in Noto shot Saru-oni in the eye. His corpse was buried in the cave and a shrine was built.
Iwaido Shrine has its origins in the legend. Local people call it “Saru-oni-no-miya” or “the shrine of Saru-oni”. There are places in the neighborhood that have names related to the legend.
The name “Tôme” (hit in the eye) comes from the legend according to which an arrow hit Saru-oni in the eye. The name “Kuro-kawa” (black river) is derived from a story according to which a river of Saru-oni’s black blood was formed. In addition, Saru-oni, who had his eye shot with an arrow, cleansed his eyes with ôbako (a kind of herb), which gave the name Ôbako to a local area.
