Tide jewels
In Japanese mythology, the tide jewels-- individually, the kanju (干珠, lit. "(tide-)ebbing jewel") and manju (満珠, lit. "(tide-)flowing jewel")-- were magical gems that the Sea God used to control the tides. Classical Japanese history texts record an ancient myth that the ocean kami Watatsumi 海神 "sea god" or Ryūjin 龍神 "dragon god" presented the kanju and manju to his demigod son-in-law Hoori, and a later legend that Empress Jingū used the tide jewels to conquer Korea.
Tide jewels interrelate Japanese dragons and wani sea-monsters, Indonesian mythology, the nyoi-ju 如意珠 "cintamani; wish-fulfilling jewel" in Japanese Buddhism, magic jewels of Nāga kings in Hindu mythology, and the pearl associations of Chinese dragons in Chinese mythology.

The Japanese compounds kanju 干珠 lit. "ebb jewel" and manju 満珠 lit. "flow jewel" combine kan 干 (cf. 乾) "dry up; drain off; ebb (tides); recede; oppose" and man 満 "fill; full; rise (tides); fulfill; satisfy" with ju, shu, or tama 珠 "gem; jewel; precious stone; pearl; bead". Compare the reversible compounds kanman 干満 and mankan 満干 or michihi 満ち干 meaning "ebb and flow; high and low tides; the tides". Shiomitsu-tama 潮満珠 and shiohiru-tama 潮干珠 are archaic "tide jewel" names using shio or chō 潮 "tide; flow; salt water".

Two Nara period (710-794 CE) historical texts record myths that the Sea God presented the kanju and manju to Hoori, and a Kamakura period (1192-1333 CE) text says the legendary Empress Jingū used the tide jewels to conquer a Korean kingdom in 200 CE.
The tide jewels
are central to "The Lost Fishhook" legend about the fisherman Hoderi and hunter Hoori, two brothers who argued over replacing a lost fishhook. Hoori went searching to the bottom of the sea, where he met and married Toyotama-hime, the daughter of the dragon Sea God. After living three years in the undersea Ryūgū-jō 竜宮城 "dragon palace castle", Ryūjin presented Hoori with his brother's fishhook and the tide jewels, and arranged for him to take his sea-dragon bride back to land.

The ca. 680 CE Kojiki 古事記 "Record of Ancient Matters" uses the archaic names shiomitsu-tama 潮満珠 "tide-flowing jewel" and shiohiru-tama 潮干珠 "tide-ebbing jewel" in two consecutive passages.
The first describes the sea-god's advice to Hoori about how to confront his duplicitous brother Hoderi.

The ca. 1195 CE Mizukagami 水鏡 "Water Mirror", which is a collection of historical tales, confabulates the Nihongi legends about the tide jewels and Jingū conquering the Koreans (Bassett 1885:74). This text uses some different names, Sāgara 沙竭羅 (one of the 8 Dragon Kings) for the Sea God, and Koryo 句麗 or Koma 蓋馬 for the Korean kingdom Goguryeo.

The history of the kanju and manju tide jewels continues into the present day, long after the myths about Hoori's lost fishhook and Jingō's invented conquest.
..... The Japanese word for "pearl", shinju 真珠 lit. "true jewel", compares with kanju 干珠 "tide-ebbing jewel" and manju 満珠 "tide-flowing jewel".
This kanji 珠 is also pronounced tama, cognate with tama 玉 "jewel; gem; jade" seen above in the name Toyotama-hime and below in the next.

The fable of Tamatori-hime 玉取姫 "Princess Jewel Taker", which was a favorite ukiyo-e subject of Utagawa Kuniyoshi,

Manju Shima 満珠島 "tide-flowing jewel island" and Kanju Shima 干珠島 "tide-ebbing jewel island" are uninhabited islets in the Kanmon Straits near Chōfu 長府 in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi. In the 1185 CE Battle of Dan-no-ura during the Genpei War, the Minamoto (Genji) fleet defeated the Taira (Heike) fleet by taking advantage of the tides around these two islands.
In 1943, the Manju maru 満珠丸 and Kanju maru 干珠丸 Etorofu class coastal defense ships were named after the tide-jewel islands.

Several Shinto shrines were allegedly repositories for the ancient tide jewels. The ca. 1335 CE Usa hachiman no miya engi 宇佐八幡宮縁起 "History of the Hachiman Shrine at Usa" notes .....
..... the Ōwatatsumi-jinja 大海神社 in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka and the Mekari-jinja 和布刈神社 in Moji-ku, Kitakyūshū purportedly housed the original tide jewels. The Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto annually holds the Gion Matsuri celebrating the legend of Jingū using the tide jewels to defeat the Koreans.

On a very small princess Daruma doll there is only one of these jewels.
The three jewels remind us of the Korean war of Empress Jinguu, which was favoured by a strong wind called "Treasure of Ebb and Tide" (kanju manju 干珠満珠). But come to think about this name, there should be only two jewels!

During her conquest of Korea, Empress Jingu Kogo stopped at 筑前国香椎 Chikuzen, Kashii to pray at the shrine to Sumiyoshi Myojin 住吉大明神. The Deity told her to get the Tide Jewels from the Dragon King Palace. When she asked how that could best be done, the Deity told her to sent Azumi Isora and have him dance for the Dragon King.
So she send her sister 豊姫 Toyohime and Azumi to the Dragon Palace and they returned with the Tide Jewels.

His ancestor is the deity Wadatsumi no Kami 少童命 / 綿津見神.

The Temple 善宝寺 Zenpo-Ji in Tsuruoka is famous from Tohoku to Kanto as a place to pray for a good catch.
In Mie it is the Temple 青峯山正福寺 Shofuku-Ji.
Once a statue of 十一面観音像 Kannon Bosatsu with 11 faces came riding on kujira 鯨魚 a whale.
She became the portector deity of fishermen and sailors at Shofuku-Ji.

Once upon a time
The second child of the courtier Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu 藤原冬嗣 (775 - 826), named Fuyuhisa 冬久, was very wise and learned, so his mother wanted him to take over the family name and business. (Customary it was the eldest son, not the second one.) Since it was against all reason, it could not be and his mother was very upset about it. He also lost his mind completely, developed a skin disease and finally left the home to take residence at Iwai.
One day he met a woman who showed him a hot spring:

"I am the Deity of Healing, 医王 I-O. I have waited for you here. Please make this hot spring available to all people to come here and get healed!"
Then the deity vanished.

Fuyuhisa later offered a statue of Yakushi Nyorai and founded the temple 東源寺 Togen-Ji.
He was soon known as 宇治長者 the Elder from Uji to all people.
Since 859 this is one of the Eight Old Hot Springs of the Heian period.

One special way of using the hot spring here is called 湯かむり yukamuri, where the bather covers his head with a hand towel and pours the hot water over it with a special dipper 柄杓　while he chants a special song, 湯かむり歌 yukamuri uta, to count the time.

Prayers to the Jizo images are said to help sufferers of internal illnesses including cancer (cancer in Japanese is gan, hence the alternative name of the temple Ganfujidera).
The temple grounds are full of scores of statues of Jizo, both large and small, many of them capped with a red bonnet.



The pleasant temple grounds of Jizoji abound with images of Jizo (the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha) and the temple also attracts supplicants who seek an easy delivery and help with conceiving a child.

The main statue of Enmei Jizo 延命地蔵願王菩薩 is never shown.
It is said to have a staff 錫杖 of pure gold (kinshaku, hence the name Kinshakuzan 金錫山).
During an epidemic in the Heian period people suffered a lot.

After a statue was brought from Yudonoyama, people begun to get healed when visiting here. Now apart from healing cancer, the Jizo is also helpful in getting pregnant and rearing children and traffic safety.

Jogyoji Temple
one of the Nichiren Buddhism temples in Kamakura. Founded in 1313 by Nitten. . It was used to be health pray for Minamoto and Hojo vassals. This is very small temple, but there are nice carvings, especially dragon on the gate. There is also Seven Lucky gods for good luck, and Hariti for having baby, and protect form illness.
One of the Sumurai who assassinate Ii Naosuke, Matsunosuke Hiroki did Harakiri in this temple, and there is his tomb in this temple.
This temple enshrines cure stone, Inari for health, and Hariti for babys. So, if you have health problem, visiting this temple is one of the choice you can have.

Affectionately called "Ishikiri-san," Ishikiri-Tsurugiya Shrine,
located in Higashiosaka City at the foot of Mt. Ikoma, has long been familiar to people in Osaka from olden times as a deity who cures dembo (tumors and boils). Believed to have special powers to heal diseases, the shrine is worshipped by many people even today. The name "Ishikiri-Tsurugiya Shrine" is derived from the enshrined objects of worship:
a sword and arrow (tsurugi and ya) that are able to cut (kiri) and penetrate any rocks (ishi).
Walking along the 1 km approach to the shrine from the station, visitors can find a number of fortune-tellers' signboards, eateries, herbal medicine pharmacies, and grocery stores. The street's unique, retrospective atmosphere makes visitors feel as if they are experiencing a time warp.

A Cancer Pilgrimage in the Mountains of Japan

The Tamagawa baths, situated in the mountains of Japan’s Akita prefecture, have long been believed to hold medicinal powers. Today, the area attracts cancer patients from all over the country, who hope that the naturally acidic hot springs and radioactive stones might heal them. The Japanese photographer Tsutomu Yamagata first heard of the baths when his father was diagnosed with cancer several years ago. His father died soon afterward and never went to to Tamagawa, but, three years ago, Yamagata began visiting the valley himself to photograph the pilgrims who hoped to benefit from its healing force. “I felt that I saw a representation of the Japanese view of life and death within this valley,” he said.

“People fighting cancer throw themselves at the mercy of the radiation that fills the valley,” he writes. The scene reminded him of a depiction of the supreme enlightenment of Nirvana, in which Buddha lies in the center of the ten great disciples. The image, he writes, “describes the stage where all Bonno (earthly desires) are entirely gone.”

Tsubaki Shrine is located south of central Matsuyama, just off the busy road to Tobe. Turn off to the right and the scenery suddenly becomes a little more rural, and away in the distance can be seen an imposing edifice, surrounded by trees and framed by two huge torii gates. The first view of a grand shrine always creates a thrill of excitement and anticipation, which grows as you approach.

Shrines are also communal spaces, and Tsubaki Shrine has a large modern hall hidden from the main shrine buildings by trees. Drawn by the sound of some very raucous enka singing and loud clapping, I entered the hall to find a banquet in full swing, with nobody under 70 years old. The music was accompanying a ribald performance of old people dressed up as cats, decorated with silver tinsel. From a Shinto perspective, this is quite natural behavior, and because shrines are meant to promote human joy, a bacchanal on the shrine precincts is perfectly appropriate

Mizuhiki 水引 ceremonial paper strings paper cord craft. presentation ribbon quote Mizuhiki indicates the material itself as a paper cord, and also indicates the ornament or the work that is made of mizuhiki paper cords. Nowadays, the most opportunity to encounter the mizuhiki ornament is at the reception desk of wedding reception, where the invited guest hands over the shugi-bukuro (money envelope) decorated with Mizuhiki ornament to a receptionist. The custom that binds a gift with colored cords and defines the significance of its shape is a traditional culture of Japan that has been lasting 1400 years, and it is said that its custom had come from China originally. Because it is covered with glue made of seaweed and white clay to stiffen it, the Mizuhiki has enough strength and moderate elasticity, that make it possible to make a three-dimensional ornament easily and to maintain its shape for a long time. As mentioned before, because the culture of Mizuhiki which includes the rules of gift giving is one that reflect the social system of old times. Nowadays, it seemed that the frequency of using Mizuhiki as a traditional practice is on the decrease. But, because its physical character is effective even now, the application of mizuhiki paper cords, such as materials of handicraft or the alternative ribbon of gift wrapping, is expanding. ...
