Tora トラ - 虎 - 寅 the Tiger Toys

. Tora Yakushi 寅薬師 "Tiger Yakushi" - Yakushi Nyorai .

The tiger is one of the 12 zodiac animals of the Asian calendar.
He is therefore a well-liked animal in folk art and handicraft.

. 2010 the Year of the Tiger 寅年 toradoshi
the white tiger in the West 白虎

It comes as a papermachee doll, clay doll or clay bell and other materials.
A tiger "can run for a thousand miles" and sees things far away, so it is a symbol for strength and good health. In China the tiger was known to ward off evil influence from the mind, so people put up little tiger figures to protect themselves and their families.

Something that is very special to you and you do not want to let go is called

tora no ko 虎の子 child of a tiger.
This shows the strong bond between a mother and her children.

Tigers are not native to Japan, but people of old have used their imagination to produce figures according to the tales they have heard and paintings they could collect from abroad. The first real tiger was brought to Japan via the Korean embassy in 1595 as a present to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

This is an old clay figure from Fushimi, in the collection of the Japan Toy Museum.
The Tiger Collection of the Museum is from Nagao Zensaburo 長尾善三, who collected more than 1000 tiger pieces. Zensaburo was born in the year of the tiger in Osaka in 1902 and visited the Shinno-San festival when he was 12 years old.

This is a papermachee doll in the tradition of Miharu Dolls.
Many were made after WW II. The tiger holding up his bottom is an old tradition from the Edo period. The male tiger has his head is slightly bent to the left and the mouth is wide open. There is also a female with the mouth closed, looking to the right. Thus they represent the "A-Un" spirit of Buddhism, represented in the Deva Kings.

This amulet helps to avoid evil influences and keeps the children healthy.
It was first made by Iida Kishichi 飯田喜七, who had made Daruma dolls with the wish for safety at sea of the local fishing boats.
He then made the zodiac animals, especially the rabbit (usagi 卯) and this tiger 寅. He stopped producing, so there are no more animals for the following year of the dragon and later.
This is a papermachee doll.
It wiggles with its head, which is fixed in a special way that it looks to the side.
The yellow body is painted in vivid colors of red and black, with blue eyes.

The horse is black and the decorations are in red.
At this shrine a black horse was offered in rain rituals to pray for rain.
A white horse was offered to pray for ending a rainy period.

Later on, instead of offering a life horse, these standing votive tablets where used.
This is maybe the oldest version of a "horse votive tablet".

Tamukeyama Hachiman Gu 手向山八幡宮
Hachimansha, Shrine Hachiman Sha 八幡社

Tamuke-yama Hachimangu Shrine

quote
Tamukeyama Hachiman-gu Shrine celebrates the Shinto deity Hachiman and is located in Zoshi Town, Nara. In 749 (the Nara period) Emperor Shomu transferred part of the spirit of the Hachiman deity from Usa Hachiman-gu Shrine (the head Hachiman shrine in Kyushu) and founded Tamukeyama Shrine to act as a guardian of Todai-ji Temple.

The Tamukeyama Shrine became the first branch of the Hachiman shrine.
Later, in 1250, Hojo Tokiyori 北条時頼 relocated the shrine to its present site. The main building was burned down by fires during various wars and was rebuilt in 1691. Its treasure storehouse built in the Azekura-zukuri construction style also contains elements of Tempyo architectural style from Todai-ji Temple, and is designated as an Important Cultural Asset by the Japanese government.

The shrine contains many other assets, including Karakura (National Treasure) and Bugaku-men (Important Cultural Asset). The shrine also hosts various annual Shinto religious rituals such as Tegai-e on January 5th and the Otau-e Festival in February.
Tamukeyama Shrine has been surrounded by beautiful red and yellow autumn leaves (momiji) since ancient times and Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and a poet who is enshrined as a deity of scholarship, composed a poem about the shrine which appeared in the poetry collection One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets.

At the present time,
Since I could bring no offering,
See Mount Tamuke!

As a tribute to the gods.

for this journey now,

quote
Nara Ningyoo 奈良人形 dolls from Nara
If you have ever been to Nara you most likely have visited the Kasuga Shrine with its many donated lanterns. It was established in 768A.D. Nara ningyo originated from Kasuga's ancient festival dance called dengaku. Certain musicians would wear hats with small wood figures hanging from them. In 1620-40's a craftsman by the name of Okano Heiemon started making what are now called Nara dolls modeled after the small figures on the hats.
Nara dolls
are distinct in their appearance. They are cut from a block of wood and the cuts are very angular and are called to-no-kiri (sword cut) or itto-bori 一刀彫 (one chisel carving).
The dolls
are painted with very bright matte colors. Most dolls are representations of Noh theater characters. Most pre-Meiji dolls are rare since these dolls are not cute and cuddly and exhibit a sharp crudeness.

Made at the kilns of 赤膚焼 Akahada pottery - “red skin”pottery
since the Showa period.

- quote -
Akahadayaki 赤膚焼 Akahada pottery
Akahada is the name of the area in Nara where pottery kilns have been located for hundreds of years, serving temples, shrines and the imperial court. The origin of Akahada-yaki ceramics is not clearly known but it is said to have been recognized as an important kiln in the Momoyama-era (1568-1600), when a local samurai general, Toyotomi Hidenaga (1540-1591) invited a skilful potter to the Akahada area to produce Hidenaga’s tea ceremony bowls and tools.
Manufactured in Gojyo, Nara City, is one of the Enshu Seven Kilns so named because Kobori Enshu, a prominent tea master, loved them.
In the early Edo-era (1603-1868), one of the masters of the Japanese tea ceremony school, Kobori Enshu (1579-1647), was a great fan of Akahada-yaki and gave it his official patronage.
Typical Akahada-yaki ceramics have a thick round shape with a faintly reddish and white color produced by the unique chemicals used for the glaze and the iron-rich soil used. It has a silky touch and many Akahada-yaki ceramics are embossed with a rustic scene of people or deer. These are called Nara-e (pictures of Nara).
