Kamuro were the small girls who attended the great courtesans of the Yoshiwara. Brought into service at the age of five to nine, they paraded in their "older sister" courtesan's retinue when she appeared in public, ran errands for her, and attended her when she met with clients. The streets of the Yoshiwara were lively with brightly dressed little girls going to and fro, carrying orders to merchants, calling on vendors, delivering gifts, trading jokes with the locals, buying snacks for their older sisters to eat hurriedly between clients. They were participants in the life of the Yoshiwara just as much as their older sisters, laughing at samurai visitors' boorish manners and composing haiku about life in the Yoshiwara.

..... Kamuros' Names
Kamuros' names were simple, in contrast with the courtesans' often flowery names. They were usually written in katakana, a less learned and more childish script, rather than in the more sophisticated kanji. And they were created as a pair: Iroha (Color) and Nioi (Scent), or Chidori (Sandpiper) and Namiji (Trail of Waves). The two names could also have a more erudite theme, such as Kureha and Ayaha, names of famous weavers from two different ancient Chinese kingdoms. They could even reproduce a line of poetry: Fujino + Takane = "the high summit of Mt. Fuji."

Before Sendai became a castle town, there was a district called 北七番丁 Kita-Shichibancho with the estate of 湯田靱負 Yuda Yukie, a vassal of 大崎 Osaki.
Around 1500 when there was a party, a young woman appeared and helped, working as hard as ten people. When the trays with the meal were served, the young woman suddenly vanished. At the end of the meal she appeared again and did all the cleaning. She never said a word and nobody knew where she had come from.

いつのころか、長者原に夫婦がいて、長い間龍宮を信仰していた。あるとき龍宮に招かれ、龍王からはぎわらをもらった。そのはぎわらを先達にすると海が割れ、即座に家に帰り着いた。家に着き、はぎわらの天窓をなでて居宅と四方四万の蔵がほしいというとそのとおりになった。また、夫婦ともに28歳になりたいという願いも叶った。しかし、はぎわらを龍宮に返すと全てを失ってしまったという。

カムローとカムナーは妖怪である。古井戸を除くと水面の影をカムローに取られて病弱になることがあるという。カムラーは人のシーで20~30センチ程度の小人である。マーは子供を川や池の深みに引きずり込む。人語を話し、水から出ると元気をなくす。

カムワーは井戸に住んでいて、子供などが井戸をのぞくと引き入れてしまう。古井戸をのぞくと水面の影をカムローに取られ病気になる。

Other names: Hondawake no mikoto(Kojiki, Nihongi)

Given name of Emperor Ōjin, offspring of Emperor Chūai and his consort Okinagatarashihime. According to Kojiki, Homudawake was an alternate name for Ōtomo Wake no mikoto. It is also said to have been the original name of the central deity (saijin) Kehi ōkami of the shrine Kehi Jingū. An alternate account related by Nihongi in relation to Emperor Ōjin's early life states that as crown prince, Homudawake had exchanged names with the kami Kehi ōkami (Izasawake no kami), with the result that the original name of Kehi ōkami was Somudawake, while the crown prince's was Izasawake.

Motoori Norinaga, however, claimed that this interpretation of events was based on a misunderstanding by the editors of Nihongi. Based on the Kojiki version, Motoori stated that Izasawake no ōkami's desire to change names with the crown prince did not mean that each took the name of the other, but rather merely that the deity wished to be allowed to receive one of the crown prince's names. The crown prince's original names were Ōtomowake no mikoto and Hondawake (or Homudawake) no mikoto, but he later became known as the emperor Honda no sumera mikoto (Emperor Honda), which means that he must have given the name Ōtomowake to the kami. As a result, while Kehi ōkami originally had the name Izasawake no ōkami, it came to be known after this event as Ōtomowake no ōkami.

In Sagami, there were five major shrines starting with the

First Shrine (Ichi-n-miya), followed by
Kawawa Shrine (Ni-no-miya, or the second shrine),
Hibita Shrine (san-no-miya 三ノ宮, or the third shrine),
Sakitori Shrine (shi-no-miya, or the fourth shrine) and
Hiratsuka Hachimangu Shrine (Go-no-miya, or the fifth shrine).

At the top of those was the mother shrine Rokusho Jinja.
(All are extant in today's Hiratsuka, Oiso and Chigasaki areas.)

Samukawa Jinja Shrine
The origin of the Shrine is rather obscure. Ancient records state that way back in the 5th century, Emperor Yuryaku (his date of birth and death unknown) offered a holy tribute, or a wand with hemp and paper streamers, to the Shrine. Emperor Yuryaku was the 21st generation of the imperial family and was on the throne during the 22-year period from 456 through 478.

During the Edo Period (1603-1868) under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the Shrine was revered by the folk in eastern Japan as the guardian deity to protect the eight provinces, or today's Tokyo and its five outlying prefectures, from all evils. Later, the Shrine began to be worshiped as the guardian deity to protect the eight directions (Happoo in Japanese), in other words, all directions, after the eight provinces changed the names to today's metropolitan Tokyo and five prefectures. For instance, superstitious carpenters, who are often nervous on the directions, has been visiting the Shrine to receive its soil and using it on a ground-breaking ceremony to exorcise evil spirits.

The Hibita shrine may date back as a sacred region to more than 10000 years, according to some recent excarvations in the compound.
There was a stone circle in the compound with "standing stones" tateishi 立石.

First mention in the shrine papers date back to 655, to Jinmu Tenno 神武天皇. The shrine was connected with the mountain worship at Mount Ooyama.

Amenoakarutama 天明玉命
Other names:
Ama no akarutama, Toyotama Hime 豊玉姫 (Nihongi), Tama no oya (Kojiki), Kushiakarutama no kami, Haakaru tama, Tamanoya no mikoto (Nihongi).

According to Kojiki and an "alternate writing" transmitted by Nihongi, Amenoakarutama was commanded to fabricate the carved stones (tama) hung on the decorations (mitegura) used to entice Amaterasu from her rock cave. From that event, he was known as the ancestral kami (sojin) of the Shinabe clan, which manufactured such carved stone jewels (magatama).

Amenoakarutama entrusted the jewels to Ninigi, and in Kojiki his name is also associated with the "chiefs of the five clans" who accompanied the Heavenly Grandchild on his descent from heaven (tenson kōrin). According to Nihongi, Amenoakarutama was Ninigi's child, while he is described as the grandson of Takamimusuhi in Shinsen shōjiroku.

Other deities identified with Amenoakarutama include Haakarutama and Kushiakarutama. The first appears in Kogo shūi and an "alternate writing" quoted in Nihongi as the deity who meets Susanoo upon the latter's assent to heaven, and who later gives Susanoo the jewels used in his contest (see ukei) with Amaterasu. Kushiakarutama, on the other hand, appears as the priest Tamasuri ("he who makes the jewels") who enshrines Ōmononushi at the time of the "transfer of the land" (kuniyuzuri).

The work Engishiki also includes in its list of shrines some related to the clans and occupational groups Tamanooya no Muraji and Tamatsukuri-Be.

Toyotama Hime was known for her beautiful white skin and is now seen as the
bihada no kamisama 美肌の神様 deity for beautiful skin.



In the compound is also a monument for one of her retainers, the honorable catfish, Namazu sama なまず様. Once there was an outbreak of skin disease in the village and the princess was worried. The catfish said "I will help you". He let all the people of the village touch his body to become healthy and beautiful again.

Wakahirume 雅日女尊
[Wakahirume no mikoto] (Nihongi)


A kami of uncertain identity appearing in an "alternate writing" transmitted in Nihongi's "divine age" chapters. Wakahirume is sometimes identified as the child or younger sister of Amaterasu, or as Amaterasu herself.

The name Wakahirume ("young-day-female") suggests a contrast to Ōhirume ("great-day-female"), another name for Amaterasu).

According to the alternate Nihongi account, Wakahirume was inside the "sacred weaving hall," weaving clothes for the other heavenly kami, when Susanoo cast a "backwards-flayed piebald colt" into the hall, startling Wakahirume and causing her to fall from the loom and die.
It was her grief over Wakahirume’s death that drove Amaterasu to hide herself away in a cave.
Empress Jingu founded the Ikuta Shrine near Kobe in honor of Wakahirume.

Issa climbed up to a Shingon-school Buddhist temple called Tokumanji and prayed to its famous statue of the bodhisattva Jizo, known as Child-Rearing Jizo (子育て地蔵). The Jizo at this temple became very famous after it cured a dying three-year-old child that was declared by doctors to have no hope of recovery.

Also called Komori Myōjin 子守明神, a female deity who may appear in a triad known as Mikomori Sannyoshin 御子守三女神 (details below).

This female deity of the shrine Yoshino Mikumari Jinja 吉野水分神社 is situated on a ridge above the village of Yoshino 吉野 in southern Nara. It is one of four major watershed shrines in old Yamato 大和 (i.e., Japan). Yoshino Mikumari appears in a record of 702 and was known as a site at which to pray for control of rain and water. Apparently through a misapprehension of the sound, Mikumari became known as Mikomori, a protector of children. Mikomori is one of the eight gongen 権現 of Yoshino, gongen being the forms taken by supernatural beings in order to manifest themselves on earth. There are twenty sculptures of the deity at Yoshino Mikumari Jinja.

Tamayori Hime from Yoshino Mikumari Jinja

The most famous of these is that of Tamayorihime 玉依姫, dating from 1251. She appears in KOJIKI 古事記 (712) as the mother of Emperor Jinmu 神武. In this case she appears accompanied by two other deities and the three together are known as the Mikomori Sannyoshin. It is important to note that Tamayorihime is not identical with Mikomori Myōjin, since the latter is the collective deity of the whole shrine and includes a number of other deities.

In paintings Mikomori may appear alone or in a triad. She is shown as a court lady, and she may be with children or shown holding a vajra (a symbol/weapon often held by Buddhist deities to represent their power to overcome evil). She and/or her shrine often appear in Yoshino Mandala 吉野曼荼羅.
Mikomori Myōjin's Buddhist counterpart (honjibutsu 本地仏) is
Jizō Bodhisattva 地蔵, and the bonji 梵字 (Siddham letter or mystical sound of the deity) for
Dainichi Buddha 大日 of the Taizōkai Mandala 胎蔵界曼荼羅 may appear on paintings of her.

is a Shinto shrine located in Uda, Nara, Japan. It is dedicated to mikumari, a female Shinto kami associated with water. The honden hall was built near the end of the Kamakura period, and is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.

The root kumari possesses the same significance as the modern kubari (allocate, distribute), and mi is an abbreviated form of mizu or water.

Mikumari no kami are most often found enshrined at stream headwaters, or at the distribution forks of irrigation canals. With time, mispronunciation of the name Mikumari as Mikomori led to its association with a tutelary of children and childbirth (in this case, mi is understood as an honorific prefix, while ko-mori = lit. "child-protector," nanny, babysitter, etc.).

In connection with the motif of water, Mikumari no kami is also sometimes identified with the kami of the rice paddy (ta no kami), and when enshrined at mountain springs, with the kami of the mountain (yama no kami).

Koyasu no kami 子安の神 kinderschützende Gottheit

In Japan gab es eine eigene kinderschützende Gottheit (koyasu no kami), die auch eine leichte Geburt gewährte. Ihr Name ist Konohana no sakuya hime no mikoto und sie ist sie Göttin des Berges Fujisan.

Wegen der Ähnlichkeit mit der christlichen Marienfigur oft von den Heimlichen Christen im Japan der Edo-Zeit verehrt. Im Volksglauben besonders verbreitet.

琴崎八幡宮は平安時代の貞観元年(859)琴芝(琴柴)八王子に宇佐八幡宮の御分霊の幣帛を、琴柴村八王子社という祠を建ててお祀りしたのに興ります。
その後、寿永3年(1184)西の宮に遷して宇部郷の鎮守としました。
のち、天授3年(1377)僧の性禅と祀職の豊住が神託受けて新社地を探し求め、現在の社地に遷座いたしました。

Acording to the shrine legend, the wandering priest Gyoogyoo 行教 Gyogyo visited the region of Ube around 859 and had a shrine built in 宇部郷琴芝の浦.
The villagers prayed to Hachiman there and later built a shrine at its location where it is today, probably in 1377, according to the outcome of an oracle.

The emperor Seiwa Tenno 清和天皇 on his way from Usa Hachimangu (Kyushu) to Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto, found his fleet in a great storm (represented as a bull) and had to take shelter in Kotoshiba no ura 琴芝の浦. He had a small shrine built to thank the deities for his safety.

The first scroll is about 18 m long, the second one 16 m. On the box is the date of 1491.
