Iwami Ginzan 石見銀山 Old Silver Mines at Iwami
It was added to the World Heritage List in 2007.
- - - - - History
The mine was discovered and developed in 1526 by Kamiya Jutei, a Japanese merchant. Jutei later introduced a Chinese style of silver mining that would become the Haifukiho Method. The mine reached its peak production in the early 1600s, with approximately 38 tons of silver a year which was then one third of the world's production.
Silver from the mine
was used widely for coins in Japan. It was contested fiercely by warlords until the Tokugawa Shogunate won control of it in 1600 as a result of the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. It was later secured by fences and barricaded by pine trees. Yamabuki Castle was built in the center of the mining complex.
Silver production from the mine
fell in the 19th century, as it had trouble competing with mines elsewhere in the world. Mining for other minerals, such as copper, then replaced silver as the predominant material produced from the mountain. The mine was eventually closed in 1923.

Mihara Yassa Daruman Festival

Mihara Yassa Daruman やっさだるマン

Mihara Yassa Matsuri 三原やっさ祭り Yassa Festival

quote
The Mihara Yassa Festival is held in front of Mihara Station over a three-day period each summer. This festival, in which a great many revelers enjoy dancing what is called the "Yassa Dance," has a long and storied history. It is said to have begun around the mid-16th century, when Takakage Kobayakawa, a general of the Warring States Period, constructed a castle in Mihara to gain control over the surrounding land and sea and the townspeople celebrated the construction of the castle by singing and dancing throughout the night.

Although the form of the Yassa Dance has gradually changed with the times, the custom of dancing in an unconventional way while singing "Yassa, Yassa" to the accompaniment of shamisen (three-stringed lute), drums and other musical instruments has remained the same here in Mihara. Many of Mihara's local citizens participate in the festival, which is currently held over a three-day period during the "Obon" holiday, timed to welcome the spirits of our ancestors who visit during this period.

Many teams put on Yassa Dance performances in the festival grounds while wearing happi (livery coats) or yukata (summer robes) in a scene so lively that spectators often will jump in and start dancing with them-- everyone can have fun at the Mihara Yassa Festival. With the always effervescent Yassa Dance recently recognized as a distinctive folk dance of Hiroshima Prefecture, more and more visitors are coming to watch with each passing year.

The festival grounds are also lined with street stalls and there are fireworks displays at night. This summer, why not visit Mihara and enjoy participating in this light-hearted and cheerful dance?

From Kofu town.
When the plain of Kofu was still a lake, a dragon lived there. The Gods asked the dragon to make a sacrifice for the people, dry out the lake and give them land to farm in its place.
The dragon agreed to this proposition. In a great whirlwind he swept the water of the lake toward the sky and the plain was born.
The toy shows this "ascending dragon", which is now an amulet for good luck.

Chiyogami 千代紙

Kikujuudoo Isetatsu 菊寿堂いせ辰 store named Isetatsu
Tokyo
famous for its chiyogami printed paper

quote
Chiyogami is colorful handmade paper printed with Japanese traditional patterns or designs, and is usually used by girls for making kimono-clad dolls, small boxes, or bookmarks.

Isetatsu is now the only manufacturer/retailer of Edo-style chiyogami in Tokyo. They started the business in 1864, the end of the Edo Period, originally as a wholesaler of ukiyo-e and uchiwa (fans). Chiyogami was generally handled at nishiki-e shops at that time, and is believed to have been printed by ukiyo-e craftsmen.

The process of making Chiyogami is as time-consuming as for ukiyo-e. The more colors in the design, the more imprints it requires; some designs need more than 30 imprints per sheet. It takes about two weeks for a craftsman to complete a set of 200 chiyogami sheets that feature 20 colors.

sweets from Sendai as pattern

Shun Furukawa, one of three suri-shi (craftsman specializing in printing) at Isetatsu, says what makes multicolored chiyogami difficult to print is the nature of washi, which responds easily to humidity, swelling or shrinking. Even the slightest difference in size can make the prints look blurry.

The suri-shi first moisten the paper, so that colors can come out better. While they are printing, however, the paper may gradually dry out and shrink by up to a couple of millimeters, according to the weather. The suri-shi cover the printed paper with plastic sheets to prevent drying, but they have to pay extra attention on hot summer days or when the studio is air-conditioned. The paper shrinks, they moisten it to adjust the size, Furukawa says.

The ability to notice the difference in size comes from developing a certain feel for the process that comes only through extensive experience. Furukawa has had a 20-year career, but "I'm far from perfect," he says. "I would be happy if defective sheets are less than 10 percent out of 200 copies."

They also have to watch out for very tiny pieces of wood or dust that accidentally stick to the surface of the printing blocks, making an unprinted spot. If they are not careful enough, they could print out many defective sheets without noticing.
Isetatsu's chiyogami mainly features traditional Edo patterns or designs, or portrays the daily life of Edo's common people, though they have recently been creating some new designs, too.

Furukawa's task as a suri-shi is to copy the old designs printed decades ago as faithfully as possible. When he prints, he always keeps the sample near him and frequently compares his works to it.
