Awata Taisai 粟田大祭 Great Festival at Awata Shrine
Most shrines hold a taisai, or "grand/main festival", each year, usually centered around a parade through the area where community members shoulder a giant portable shrine. However, not all grand festivals are cut from the same cloth! Awata Shrine, a small shrine located in northern Higashiyama near famous temples Shōren-in and Chion-in, boasts a colorful and exciting series of annual rituals and parades in early to mid-October.
- - - Reiken Ceremony
Awata Shrine's daitōrō, "Awata O-toro", large lanterns made up of traditional Japanese paper painted and shaped to look like mythological creatures and deities, are assembled for a parade through the Higashiyama area. While the lanterns look interesting enough in the daytime, they really come to life when night falls and they're lit up from the inside! Deities such as the Immovable Wisdom King Fudō Myō'ō and Lucky God Ebisu make appearances alongside the fearsome Ox-Headed Heavenly King and serpentine Onamuchi, as well as zodiac animals.
These lanterns are part of a procession containing shrine treasures and torches that heads down to the Chion-in where a rare ritual occurs! Priests from the Shinto shrine and monks from the Buddhist temple join together for the Reiken ceremony in which they pay their respects to the Uryūseki, a sacred stone.
- - - Shinkō-sai Procession
The Shinko-sai procession is held to celebrate taking the shrine's god out in a portable shrine (omikoshi) to survey the neighborhood.
However, Awata Shrine doesn't only have an omikoshi, but also features some of the community's eighteen kenboko, sacred polearms said to ward off evil spirits, each featuring a distinct design.
Watching the tall weapons skillfully carried through the streets by talented bearers who can make the poles shake and ring bells at their tops is definitely one of the original points of Awata Shrine's Taisai! Even just walking around the area can be an adventure, as some kenboko are housed on display around the neighborhood along with relics and altars.
Giant lantern floats light up the night, and the next day a 1.2-ton portable shrine is carried through the streets by a total of 250 people, preceded by long poles rising into the sky, balanced by people on foot.
Dating back 1,000 years, Awata Matsuri is a syncretic festival involving both Buddhism and Shinto.

Awata-jinja Shrine has a very long history.
Kyoto became the capital of Japan in 794.
The shrine was already built before 794 and got its name from a clan that lived in this region.

In the 今立郡 Imadate district there are two boulders,
Osu-iwa 雄岩 and Mesu-iwa 雌岩, the male (husband) and female (wife) boulder.
Along the river 坂ノ下川 Sakanoshitagawa on top of the mountain there was the Osu-iwa. About 300 years ago at an earthquake, it fell down into the valley. Since then every night there is the sound of オーイ、オーイ」 Ooooi, Ooooi, when the boulder is calling for its mate.
To appease it an elder of the village in 粟田郡 the Awata district hit an arrow into the Osu-iwa and had the Buddha prayer 南無妙法蓮華経 Namu Myoho Rengekyo inscribed into the stone. Now the stone kept quiet.
But it is said that it 1000 nuns will have passed the Mesu-iwa, it will also fall down.
This has not yet happened though.

Shodai yaki 小代焼 Shodai ware

quote

- Shodai Ware
When 細川忠利 Hosokawa Tadatoshi moved from the fief of Buzen to take control of the fief of Higo in 1632, two master potters were appointed.
One of these was 源七 Genshichi, the first of a long line of potters of the Hinkoji family, and the other was 八左衛門 Hachizaemon, the first of successive generations of potters from the Katsuragi family. It was the appointment of these two men that is said to have marked the beginnings of the making of Shodai Yaki.
Much later on in 1836 and under a directive from the local clan, Senoue Rinemon, an official of the Shogunate, built the Senoue kiln as part of a program promoting industry in the area. The skills and techniques associated with the production of Shodai Yaki have been handed down over the years and it is the Noda, Chikashige and Joshima families, which have inherited them and still use them to this day.
Made from a local iron rich clay,
a particular feature of this ware is its bold and yet simple character. By modifying the blend of glazes and by utilizing the changes which take place at different firing temperatures, delicate control is exercised over the production of colors for the blue, yellow and white Shodai Yaki. In addition, the dribbled, extravagant patterns and the depth of color of the glazes harmonize with the forms of the pieces, to produce this sense of bold simplicity.
- Feature
Shodai Yaki features simple and robust touch made from Shodai clay, which contains abundant iron. Proportion of glaze and firing temperature creates their subtle colorings varying from blue, yellow to white. The patterns created by dynamic glazing makes the unique harmony with its shape.

- Ceramics
Kumamoto’s modern ceramics industry began about 400 years ago.
When the Hosokawa family moved to Higo Province (now Kumamoto) in 1632, potters also settled in the area and built kilns. Koda ware from Yatsushiro and Shodai ware from Arao and Tamana developed under the patronage of the Higo Domain, primarily producing ceramics used in traditional tea ceremony. In addition to these, there was Matsubase ware from Uki, Oda ware from Uto (Higo Domain’s only porcelain ware), and Mizunodaira, Takahama, and Maruo wares from Amakusa.
- Shodai Ware
Shodai ware originated about 400 years ago in northern Kumamoto. It became an official pottery kiln of the Higo Domain in the Edo Period and made ceramic cups used in traditional tea ceremony as well as various wares used ineveryday life.
Shodai clay has high iron content and is full of pebbles. Straw and wood ash is used in the glaze to create a simple yet dynamic style.
- Amakusa Ceramics
n the Amakusa region, porcelain ware is made using the region’s abundant porcelain stone (of which Amakusa is the top producer in the country), and earthenware is made using local clay deposits.
The production of porcelain ware in the region started 340 years ago, while the production of earthenware started 250 years ago. White porcelain pieces with a translucent quality as well as unique earthenware pieces are made in abundance.
- Koda Ware / Kōda ware 高田焼 Kōda-yaki - photo above
Koda ware first started being made in Yatsushiro City in 1632 during the early Edo Period. The designs are made not by painting, but rather by embedding white kaolin into the motifs carved into the clay.
The pottery is fired after applying a transparent glaze, and turns a slight teal color due to the iron content in the clay.

Tosa Washi Paper 土佐和紙
In Japan there are many brands of washi paper produced through traditional hand-making techniques. Of these, Kochi Prefecture’s Tosa-washi is especially known for its utility in repairing prestigious works of art.
By applying the paper with a specially purposed glue, damaged paintings and manuscripts can be made whole again. These have ranged from ukiyo-e color prints in Japan to documents stored in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as well as Michelangelo’s paintings on the Sistine Chapel ceiling and various works of art stored in the Louvre Museum in Pairs.
The secret behind the globally recognized quality of Tosa-washi is found in a combination of traditional techniques and Kochi’s rich natural resources. Though the origins of the paper are not conclusively known, in the Engishiki, a Heian-Period (794-1185) record of laws and customs, it’s noted that taxes in Tosa Province (now Kochi Prefecture) were collecting using paper. It is thus estimated that the paper’s history goes back at least 1,000 years.
The key to manufacturing quality washi lies in its main ingredients: water and kozo, the paper mulberry tree. The Niyodo River, said to have the best water on the island of Shikoku, runs through the middle of Kochi—and top-quality washi constituents such as kozo and mitsumata (Oriental paperbush) have grown along this clear stream since ancient times.
As the quality of the area’s paper came to be recognized, the number of craftspeople grew rapidly, and by the mid-Meiji Period (1868-1912), the region became the chief washi producer in Japan.
Tosa-washi is characterized not only by its quality, but also by its prolific variation. While some washi makers produce only calligraphy paper or translucent paper for shoji sliding doors, Tosa-washi is manufactured in roughly 300 variations. It’s highly valued for its thin, yet durable nature, which has led to it being known as kagero-no-hane, or dragonfly wing. It is the world’s thinnest hand-made paper. These properties have been realized through the time-honed techniques of the craftspeople who so skillfully intertwine the long, thick fibers of the kozo. The paper’s thinness and durability open up a broad range of uses, including the repair of ancient works of cultural heritage.
The traditions of Tosa-washi are still passed on to this day. With modern uses ranging from craft work to wallpaper, there’s surely a style of Tosa-washi that’s just right for you.
