Daikoku and rabbits 兎大黒 usagi Daikoku

Daikoku Ten 大黒天 Daikoku
one of the seven gods of good luck 七福神

Daikoku is considered to be the god of wealth, or of the household, particularly the kitchen. He is recognised by his wide face, smile, and a flat black hat. He is often portrayed holding a golden mallet, seated on bales of rice, with mice nearby
(mice signify plentiful food).

Its story relates to the Shinto deity

and his encounter with the white rabbit of Inaba 因幡の白兎.

The question comes to mind: why three rabbits?

My friend Mark Schumaher has some suggestions:
* Daikoku believers are granted their desires by tapping a symbolic mallet on the ground three times and making a wish.
* Daikoku often carries a mallet with a pear-shaped insignia consisting of three rings.
* There is also three-headed Daikoku, protecting the Three Buddhist Treasures (the Buddha, the law, and the community of followers).
* Perhaps the three hares symbolize any of the above.
