Most papermachee dolls from Aizu are red, a color to ward off evil and disease.
They are ment as a talisman to keep children healthy.
They are among the oldest of the Tohoku region.

When the daimyo Gamoo Ujisato 蒲生氏郷(がもううじさと)moved in on the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he brought with him many low-ranking samurai from is former fief in Matsuzaka. He therefore invited some craftsmen from Kyoto to show his samurai how to make toys.

The daimyo toy on a horse was first made by a craftsman called Igarashi 五十嵐.

Miharu koma 三春駒 horses from Miharu

Theses woodcarvings became quite popular in the late Edo period.
In the local dialect, they are called "wooden horses" kinma 木馬(きんま).
People kept them as talismans for an easy birth of their horses. They also build statues of a Kannon with a horsehead (Bato Kannon) at the entrance of their villages to protect their animals.

The horses from Koriyama city are painted black or white after carving and then colorful patterns in red, black and gold are applied. The vertical tail is attached separately.
They come in many sizes, from 3 to 30 centimeters.
The bigger ones are kept as a talisman for health and a long life.

My friend Ishino send me this photo of an incense container with a horse from Soma.
It was made by Tashiro Hokkyoo 田代法橋.
famous for Soma koma yaki pottery 相馬駒焼 which features galloping horses from Soma. It has a long tradition, going back to the 17th century. Tashiro today is in the 14. generation, but he had to leave his kiln because of radiation problems.
I have seen his artwork and life story on TV lately, it is one of these tragedies following in the wake the Fukushima atomic plant accident.
