Nishinomiya Jinja (西宮神社 nishinomiya jinja)
is a Shinto shrine in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo, Japan. It is the head shrine of the Ebisu sect of Shinto, and it is said that there are about 3,500 shrines under it. Locals call the shrine "Ebessan". It is famous for the Tōka-Ebisu festival, which is held on January 10 every year.
Particular to this festival is the "Lucky Men" race. Begun during the Edo Period, participants gather in front of the shrine's main gate before 6am on the 10th of January. At 6am, the shrine's drum sounds, the gates are opened, and the assembled crowd sprints perilously 230 meters to the main hall. The top three finishers are given the title of "Lucky Men," and of those three the champion is known as the "Luckiest Man." The race has been known to attract more than 6,000 runners.

Tori no ichi, a fair held on the day of Rooster, a Famous Rake
(Edo Jiman Sanjūrokkyō Tori no Chō Meibutsu Kumade)
Utagawa Toyokuni III and Utagawa Hiroshige II 1864 (Genji 1)
his is an illustration of the Tori no ichi Festival that took place on the day of the Rooster in the eleventh month of the lunar calendar. A man on the right of the picture holds as good omens in his right hand a rake attached with a mask of a plump-faced woman to call for fortune and holds a tuber of a taro to be ahead of others with his left hand.
Tori no ichi (Rooster's Market) Festival had its origins as an event where farmers nearby Ōtori Shrine, which was located in flower fields in the Edo outskirts (Adachi Ward), dedicated kumade (rakes). However, the fields were quite far from Edo and people came to gather at the Tori no ichi of Shitaya's Ōtori Shrine (Ryuzen, Taitō Ward) which was also known as Shintori (New Rooster).
As can also be seen in this illustration, objects of good fortune such as kumade, tuber of taros are indispensible. Even today, beginning with Asakusa, Tori no ichi takes place in all areas throughout the Kantō region and you should be able to see many vendors of kumade.
Also, in Yoshihara, it was only in Tori no ichi of the eleventh month of the lunar calendar that the gate was opened and passage was permitted to the general public. Such was the importance of Tori no ichi as one of the annual events for the people of Edo.

Nogi Shrine was established on November 1, 1923 and dedicated to General Nogi Maresuke (63) and his wife Nogi Shizuko (53) after their death on September 13, 1912.
The Tokyo Mayor, Baron Yoshio Sakatani, took the initiative to organise the Chūō Nogi Kai (Central Nogi Association) to build a shrine to the couple within their residence. It is located in Tokyo, Japan.
The shrine compound includes an example of Western architecture constructed during the Meiji period. It is famous as the site where General Nogi and his wife chose to kill themselves after the Meiji Emperor's death. The shrine was opened soon after this event but was destroyed during the 1945 air raids on May 25, 1945. The present shrine was built in 1957.
There, Nogi Maresuke (乃木希典, 乃木希典大人之命) is celebrated as a Shinto kami.

Handmade For Japan - Sept 14, 2011
will start selling its Mamezara limited edition plates on Etsy beginning 3pm EST on Monday, September 12th. Each plate costs $50 and all the proceeds go to GlobalGiving’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund, as an anonymous donor is kindly covering all the production costs.
Each Mamezara has been designed and individually handmade by HFJ’s very own potter-extraordinaire Ayumi Horie.
The Mamezara, which in Japanese means small serving dish, is adorned with an origami crane folding pattern. HFJ’s beloved bear logo designed by Dave Gordon appears on the foot. The crane symbolizes our hopes for the people of Japan to rebuild and to let them know we stand with them.
The plates are approximately 4 inches in diameter and are microwave / dishwasher safe. Mamezara dishes are used in Japan for small servings of food, appetizers, or soy sauce for sushi and sashimi. These dishes come in many different shapes and colors and are widely collected because of their versatility and range of designs. HFJ’s Mamezara dish offers a creative way to present food and is ideal for soy sauce or serving bite-sized snacks.
